This is the time of year for MLB trade rumors, and the Seattle Mariners are reportedly working on a deal of which people know very little in terms of details.

For all of the sources, all of the scoops, and all of the rumors, the Seattle Mariners appear to be playing this one close to the vest. And the amazing part is, they have actually managed to keep things quiet.

The Mariners entered the off-season needing offense. To address that need, they signed slugger Nelson Cruz. They do not appear to be done, however, and having missed out on signing free agent Melky Cabrera, it is unsurprising that the Mariners are now eyeing a trade.

That’s about all we know, however, creating a level of unknown that we rarely see anymore in this moment of scoops. Here are the reports that are otherwise cryptic about what the Mariners are up to:

Because this is being treated as a mystery trade, there seems to be a sense that it does not involve Atlanta Braves‘ outfielder Justin Upton. If there’s one thing we know by now, it’s that right-handed bats are not readily available in trades this winter. The splashiest move would be a deal for somebody on the level of Colorado Rockies‘ shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, but that seems especially unlikely.

The mystery trade will likely be for a lesser name, but that doesn’t mean it won’t matter for Seattle’s chances to contend in 2015 and beyond.
