The Atlanta Hawks were offered Greg Monroe in a trade but rejected the Detroit Pistons offer earlier this year.

While the Detroit Pistons did what they could to get Greg Monroe to sign a long-term contract this past offseason, the former Georgetown product wasn’t having it and instead opted for the one-year qualifying offer.

Those atop the Motown organization said all the correct things, though they apparently attempted to trade the big man to the Atlanta Hawks this past summer in exchange for Kyle Korver and Jeff Teague.

It was a deal the Hawks weren’t interested in according to Vincent Goodwill, though Atlanta is expected to pursue Monroe in free agency.

The Pistons wanted point guard Jeff Teague and sharpshooter Kyle Korver in return for Monroe, and the Hawks balked — perhaps with knowing Monroe could walk to them the summer of 2015, right into their cap space without having to part with valuable assets.

While many may question why the Atlanta Hawks decided not to make the move, as Goodwill notes, it’s namely because of Greg Monroe’s pending free agency. Atlanta understandably didn’t want to give up two large pieces of their roster for a player they could very well sign in the offseason.

As for the Detroit Pistons, given Greg Monroe will be unrestricted at season end, they’re going to find it difficult to find a trade partner who will give up anything of value considering he’s nothing more than a rental player at this point. That could change if the acquiring team believes with 120 percent certainty they will be able to re-sign Greg Monroe, but most players seem to enjoy the process of free agency when they’re given the opportunity.
