The Cincinnati Bengals seemed determined not to allow Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel have a coming out party in his first NFL start last weekend. Bengals defenders repeatedly mocked Manziel’s signature money sign celebration, including some right to his face.
Manziel admitted that be had a role in the taunts the Bengals relentlessly threw his way, saying he had to play better to live up to the hype and the talk.
Certainly Manziel’s first start wasn’t great, but that doesn’t necessarily mean his career won’t be better over the course of his career. Plenty of quarterbacks had horrendous first starts to go on to great success including Super Bowls and Hall of Fame Careers.
But Manziel might want to bench that trademark money sign celebration till be becomes more consistent and has some success under his belt. That won’t be coming next week.
If Manziel continues to do it, he could only be inspiring opponents like the Bengals were this past weekend.
