The San Diego Chargers are in the hunt for a playoff spot still, but they need Philip Rivers to be fully healthy which he simply is not at the moment.

When the San Diego Chargers lost to the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon, it hurt but didn’t kill their playoff chances this season. But the pain suffered in the game had more to do than with just playoff standing, as Keenan Allen was lost with a broken collarbone and quarterback Philip Rivers was banged up as well.

After missing practice this week, it appears that ‘banged up’ is underselling the injury to Philip Rivers, as the latest report indicates things are a lot more serious than they initially looked.

According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, the back injury that Rivers is dealing with is actually a lot more serious than the team may be letting on.

This is more than just bad news for fantasy football owners in their final games of the postseason, but more so for the Chargers who are trying to get there. Without Rivers, the team is basically lost as love him or hate him, Rivers is the lifeline of the Chargers.

Without that pulse, the Chargers hopes of making the playoffs dwindle significantly, which is something the Dolphins, Bills, Chiefs and Ravens are all banking on. According to the Chargers, Rivers is specter to play this Sunday, but Schefter’s report is less than encouraging and makes it seem as though the status of Philip Rivers is far more up in the air than we all thought.
