Ruben Amaro Tells Ryan Howard That Phillies Would Be Better Without Him
By Hayden Kane
Philadelphia Phillies‘ general manager apparently is not holding any punches this MLB off-season, having said that he has told first baseman Ryan Howard that the team would be better off without him.
Ryan Howard isn’t very good anymore. He probably was never as good as his contract indicated, and now that contract has become a big problem. It’s probably no secret to Howard that is the case, but it probably was also unpleasant for him to hear that fact from the general manager himself.

Ruben Amaro, in an apparent moment of candor, told Ryan Howard that the Phillies would be better off without him. Furthermore, we know that information thanks to Amaro himself.
Here is what Ruben Amaro said about Howard, courtesy of The Score in Philadelphia:
"“We’ve talked to Ryan,” the Phillies general manager told 97.5 The Fanatic on Friday. “And I told him that in our situation it would probably bode better for the organization not with him but without him. With that said if he’s with us, then we’ll work around him.”Amaro’s comments mark the first time the club has publicly indicated its desire to move Howard and the $60 million in guaranteed money due his way."
The surprise doesn’t come so much in the fact that the Phillies are trying to move Howard and will admit it, as much as it comes in the fact that Amaro was apparently pretty brutal with Howard in telling him as much.
There is finally change afoot in Philadelphia. Ryan Howard probably knew that the team would try to trade him as part of those changes, but now he knows in no uncertain terms how the team feels about him.
