The complete road to a playoff berth for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The loss on Sunday by the Kansas City Chiefs to the Pittsburg Steelers certainly complicated the road to the playoff for the Chiefs, but it did not eliminate them from playoff contention. They still have a chance to get into the postseason, but they now need help from a pair of non-playoff teams.

Here are the results that are necessary to get Kansas City into the playoffs:

  1. Chiefs win over San Diego
  2. Baltimore loses to Cleveland
  3. Houston loss or tie to Jacksonville

The reason for the first and second items on that list is obvious. The Chiefs must beat the Chargers to get to nine wins. The Ravens already have nine, and thus must lose to in order for Kansas City to force a tie and get into a tiebreaker scenario.

This would put the Chiefs into the playoffs based on conference record. Kansas City would be 7-5 in conference games, while the Ravens would drop to 5-7.

Unfortunately for Kansas City, the Texans can spoil the playoff party for a 9-7 Chief’s team. If the Texans win at home over Jacksonville, they’ll also be 9-7.

In that case, Houston would take the final playoff spot over the Chiefs. Houston would finish with an 8-4 record in the conference, which would be better than Kansas City’s 7-5 conference record.

As you can see, this isn’t an easy path for the Chiefs. They need help from Cleveland and Jacksonville to have a shot. Unfortunately, neither of those teams are playing well at the moment.

First though, the Chiefs must take care of their own business. They must beat the Chargers and then see what happens in the other games.
