Kurt Warner Could Return To Cardinals, If They Cut Him First
By Sam Richmond
While it was previously thought it would be impossible for Kurt Warner to sign with the Arizona Cardinals this season, there is one scenario in which it could occur.
There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks about retired quarterback Kurt Warner returning to the Arizona Cardinals this season due to the team’s horrible quarterback situation.

However, as Pro Football Talk points out, the key for the Cardinals getting Warner back involves cutting the legendary quarterback first.
"Sure, it’s too latefor the Cardinals to reinstate Warner from the reserve/retired list. But there’s a way to make it happen.Per a league source, the Cardinals could release Warner from the reserve/retired list and then re-sign him. However, Warner would first pass through waivers, which would allow any other team to disrupt the arrangement by making a claim for his contract."
It surely sounds like this could be a risky move for the Cardinals. It would be disastrous for Arizona if they released Warner and another team then claimed him.
Then, the Cardinals would have to go back to playing Logan Thomas or Ryan Lindley after basically letting those guys know that the team believed a 43-year-old that hasn’t thrown an NFL pass in five years to be a better option than either of them.
Still, Warner actually has to be, you know, interested in making an NFL comeback for these scenarios to potentially play out and it doesn’t seem like he is.
Here’s Warner to azcentral.com earlier in December:
"“As fun as it sounds and as neat of a story as it could be, yeah,” he said. “I have to be the one that understands really what this would entail and to be realistic that there’s no way I can do it.”"
So, while the Cards technically could get Warner back, don’t expect to see the Super Bowl-winning QB in a Cardinals jersey come playoff time.
