While the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t sneak into the AFC Playoffs today after their 19-7 victory over the San Diego Chargers, a few highlights did come out of the win.
First off, they kept their divisional rival Chargers out of the playoffs, which is always satisfying. Secondly and most notably though, outside linebacker Justin Houston picked up a ridiculous four sacks in the game. With JJ Watt (only) picking up three today, Houston finished with 22 on the season and took home the 2014 NFL Sack title. He also established a new Chiefs single-season sack record, passing Derrick Thomas’ 20 sacks back in 1990.
Here’s his 21st of the season which now ranks him as the Chiefs single-season sack master:
Arrowhead Stadium was in a state of madness when the sack happened, but one fan stood out most, Houston’s son:
After tacking on one more, it put him only .5 behind Michael Strahan’s single-season record of 22.5. He also finished the season with 59 tackles and five pass deflections.
Chase Daniel started for Kansas City as Alex Smith couldn’t go due to a lacerated spleen. He made most of the opportunity though sending Philip Rivers, Eric Weddle and the rest of the Chargers home for playoff season.
