Ohio State warns students not to skip class for national championship game

Ohio State warns students about skipping classes for the national championship game against Oregon.

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Oregon Ducks are set to clash Monday night in the College Football Playoff national championship game, the first as a result of a playoff. For college students, getting to see your school play for a national championship like this is an incredibly special and rare event, especially while you’re still a student.

So you can’t blame some students for wanting to skip a couple days of class to see the game in person right?

Well if you to Ohio State, you better not think about skipping class for the game, which falls during the first week of the spring semester. If you skip class, you could be dropped as a result.

From Associated Press:

"The vice provost for undergraduate studies, Wayne Carlson, sent students an email this week that says it’s up to professors to decide whether traveling to the game in Dallas is an acceptable excuse for students to miss classes Monday or Tuesday. If absences aren’t cleared with an instructor, students absent during the first week could be taken off a class roster."

Certainly schools are understanding of big games, I know the University of Oklahoma used to give students the Monday off after the Red River Rivalry weekend if they beat Texas. It is kind of shocking to see Ohio State draw this line in the sand since they were the last team into the playoff and they weren’t really in contention until late in the season.

It is even more shocking given the fact that it is the first day of class for a new semester. This is the day that you show up, go over the syllabus and probably leave early.

They did leave the loop hole of clearing it with your professor, and I have a hard time imagining many students would get push back from their professors for wanting to attend the game.
