Former Jets great and Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath gives a big thumbs-up to owner Woody Johnson for his handling of the offseason so far.

When speaking about the history of the New York Jets, one man separates himself and comes to the forefront: Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath.

The 71-year-old Super Bowl champion has remained very close to the organization and is never afraid to speak his opinion, both positively and negatively. Of course he’s a cheerleader and wants to see the Jets succeed at every turn, but he’s been known to crush them as well when times call for it.

This week, owner Woody Johnson wrapped up his general manager and coaching search with the hiring of former Houston Texans personnel man Mike Maccagnan and Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. Despite the common knowledge that Johnson was in love with former head coach Rex Ryan, he did the right thing by parting ways with him and Namath recognized this along with most NFL insiders.

Namath officially provided his stamp of approval about the way Johnson handled the Ryan and John Idzik firing.

This thought about Johnson handling it correctly is one that the media will now have to get used to, as they normally have a field day with the way the Jets run their franchise.

Taglines like “The Circus is in Town” had usually taken the back pages for each of the last six-years under Ryan. Now, after what everybody is considering a solid hire in Bowles, the tagline has quickly shifted from circus references to “There’s a New Sheriff in Town.”

Namath is usually pretty active on Twitter, so we’ll know how he feels about the new Jets tag-team as time marches on.
