Indianapolis Colts tailback Trent Richardson has been suspended for two games, but it’s not known if that means 2015 or the two games he already missed.

Colts GM Ryan Grigson confirmed on Friday that the team, not the NFL, has indeed suspended tailback Trent Richardson for two games. What’s not confirmed is whether the two game suspension applies to games in the 2015 season or if it just covers the AFC title game, which he missed anyway, and the Super Bowl, which the Colts are obviously not playing in.

Grigson didn’t say what the ban was for or confirm what games the ban covered.

Previously, Richardson did not travel with the team for the AFC title game against the Patriots last week. He was deactivated for Sunday and also missed the Saturday walk-through. The reason given was a serious family emergency. Richardson was also inactive for the Colts win over the Broncos in the divisional round.

“I wouldn’t just purposely turn my back on the team,” Richardson told ESPN.com “I would have been there if I wasn’t dealing with this issue.”

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for the Colts and Richardson since they got him for a first-round pick to the Browns in September of 2013. He lost his starting job late that season to Donald Brown, but then regained it in the 2014 season, before losing it again late to Daniel Herron. He played only one snap in the Wild Card round against the Bengals. He hasn’t rushed for 100 yards in a game and has only amassed 977 yards in 29 games for the Colts.

According to Pro Football Talk, Grigson was noncommittal when asked whether Richardson would return for the last year of his contract with the Colts. He said the tailback would be evaluated just like all the other players and a decision made then. Richardson has a guaranteed $3.18 million salary for the 2015 season.

Richardson is only 24 and the Colts thought he was worth a first-round pick in 2013, but he obviously hasn’t produced as they had hoped. Further, they obviously aren’t happy with whatever has kept Richardson out of two playoff games and the third playoff game where he only played one snap.

It’s hard to imagine they hang on to him next season when he hasn’t contributed much to the Colts late-season success.
