Jeff Van Gundy claims the Chicago Bulls upper management has reporters in their back pocket.

Jeff Van Gundy always gives you a strong opinion and last night was no different when he passionately defended Chicago Bulls head coach and his former assistant Tom Thibodeau. Van Gundy said the attacks on Thibodeau’s job security by “fringe” media are unfair.

It got really interesting when Van Gundy went after Bulls management for having “reporters in their back pocket.” He also went back in time commenting on the poor treatment Phil Jackson, Scott Skiles and Vinny Del Negro all received.

Thiboudeau was a long time assistant for Van Gundy in both New York and in Houston. Very classy of Van Gundy to say that he knew that Thibodeau was “the best coach on his staff then, including Van Gundy”.

As to whether Thibs is on the hot seat, I don’t see it. The season would have to unravel more than a bad two-week stretch and even then I’d be shocked if the Bulls made an in-season change. If the year ends up on a down note and the Bulls get ousted in the first round, then there will in all likelihood be a serious conversation.

One thing to remember is Jerry Reinsdorf loves Thibodeau and Thibs has always been complimentary to Reinsdorf. General manager Gar Forman would be sticking out his own neck pretty far to recommend a change.

Meanwhile, the Bulls are coming off impressive back-to-back victories over San Antonio and Dallas. So much for Thibs losing the team.
