The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris is returning to the NFC South as he will be joining the Atlanta Falcons staff

Raheem Morris will soon be accepting a position to join the staff of the Atlanta Falcons under their soon-to-be head coach Dan Quinn. Quinn, the current Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator, will be formally introduced as the Falcons head coach on February 2nd, right after Super Bowl XLIX between the Seahawks and the New England Patriots at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ.

It is unclear what role Morris will be accepting under Quinn but the obvious choices are either defensive coordinator or defensive backs coach, the position he has held with the Washington Redskins since 2012.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution believes it could be some form of hybrid-assistant-defensive coordinator role.

Morris when he became the coach of Tampa Bay in 2009, was one of the youngest head coaches to ever coach a team at just 33 years old. He led Tampa Bay to a franchise best seven game turnaround at 10-6 in 2010 but just fell short of reaching the postseason.

However, the Buccaneers posted only a 17-31 record in his three seasons in Tampa Bay and he was let go after the 2011 season.

Morris, 38, is still one of the youngest coaches in the league, and now being an integral part of what the Falcons do going forward, will once again have a chance to make a name for himself and continue to build his resume at once again being a head coach in this league.

The Falcons need all the help they can get defensively. Under former defensive coordinator Mike Nolan last year, the Falcons gave up the most passing yards per game defensively along with leading the league for the wrong reasons in giving up yards in other areas.

It’s no surprise to see Morris brought in to coach under Quinn. Morris played football for Quinn, while Quinn was a coach at Hofstra in the late 90’s.

Their relationship goes far back and Morris is a guy Quinn trusts to run the defense he wants to run in Atlanta. However, the caliber of players defensively that Quinn will have in Atlanta compared to what he has in Seattle is night and day.

That will be a big area that Atlanta will address come the draft this year so they can match the dynamic offense they have as they look to build a dynamic defense to coincide with it.

Raheem Morris will have his chance to put a stamp on what will most likely be a new look Falcons defense. If they can create a defense to match their offense, Atlanta will be able to compete in a winnable NFC South.
