There is a referendum set to take place in Ireland in early May, the issue of the referendum is same-sex marriage. Lots of people have been speaking out for, and against the topic.

Farrell has given his support to the pro gay marriage side, stating many reasons for this, but the main one being that his brother is gay and he has witnessed first-hand the prejudice that exists in the country, and world-wide.

"“I found out my brother was gay when I was about 9 years of age, me, I never found it to be anything other than just the way he was, I never thought of it in terms of any un-naturalness”"

The star had a lot to say while on live television show ‘Claire Byrne Live’, one topic was how is brother Eamon had to go to Canada to get married to his partner. Farrell seemed bewildered that in this day and age, same-sex couples are forced to leave their home country to marry.

"“To see them everyday live their lives as a happily married couple is an amazing thing and to think that they had to leave their own country is sad and disappointing and just grossly unfair”"

The issue of people being against same-sex marriage was raised, and Farrell was asked if he could understand the anti-gay marriage section of the country’s concerns. The actor had this to say:

"“I try to understand the view point of people who have concerns with same sex marriage, but I can’t see how a man and a man, or a woman and a woman declaring love and declaring faithfulness and declaring the same things til death do us part as men and woman have for centuries…I can’t see how that could br a threat”"

When asked about the sanctity of marriage, the interviewer asked Mr. Farrell his opinion on anti-gay marriage’s stance that it’s undermining the institution of marriage. Farrell was cool calm and collected and answered with the fact that there are a lot of unsuccessful traditional marriages between men and women.

"“All we’ve known up until now is marriage between man and a woman, and guess what; there’s a hell of a lot of unsuccessful marriages between men and women. There’s a hell of a lot of children who have to experience the day to day arguing, the bickering, the domestic violence between their parents.”"

The interview has gone over well in Ireland and no one is doubting the sincerity the actor displayed throughout the interview. The issue of gay marriages is sparking debates throughout the country, and the debate will roll on until the referendum in early May.
