Wade Phillips was once the Broncos defensive coordinator before, could he be returning?

Wade Phillips is no stranger to the Denver Broncos, as he was their defensive coordinator under Dan Reeves and then was the team’s head coach for a season before being let go.

Now, Phillips, 67, could be returning to the Broncos to be their defensive coordinator, according to Adam Schefter.

After firing John Fox, and hiring former quarterback Gary Kubiak to be their head coach, the Broncos are in search of a defensive coordinator.

Phillips, was the defensive coordinator for Kubiak when they coached the Houston Texans. After Kubiak was fired, Phillips became the interim head coach before the team went out and hired Bill O’Brien.

The reunion could be on in Denver.

Phillips has been a defensive coordinator seven different times in this league — having coached the defense of the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers and the aforementioned Texans.

Ironically enough, during his stops in New Orleans, Denver, Buffalo, Atlanta, and Houston, Phillips would become interim head coach or the permanent head coach after his defensive coordinator stint.

The Broncos are looking to move to a base 3-4 defense and Phillips knows how to coach the 3-4 defense. A 3-4 system requires edge rushers that can get after the quarterback. The Broncos have the perfect pieces for a 3-4 defense with DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller lining up on the outside having free run at the quarterback.

After losing to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Divisional Round, the Broncos need to make a change if they want to get back to the Super Bowl and have another shot at the Lombardi Trophy.

Phillips might be the guy to do so.

Phillips has been coaching football since 1969 and has been around the game for almost 50 years.

His relationship with Kubiak extends far back and if that is anything to go off of, he could be once again the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos after having served in the same postion 20+ years ago.
