There might have been some fans out there that were concerned that Seahawks safety Earl Thomas was in danger of missing the Super Bowl.
Of course, that was never in doubt to him, and Wednesday he announced that his shoulder was a 10 out of 10 in terms of being fully healed and ready to go.
The next day, on Thursday, he was selected for random HGH (human growth hormone) testing by the league.
Random, or strangely coincidental? Thomas seems to think it’s the latter.
This, after Richard Sherman said earlier in the year that any player having a great game could expect to be selected by the league for random drug testing. Clearly he’s never seen how many times former Seahawks quarterback and current Colts backup Matt Hasselbeck gets tested and he’s not even playing.
Ed Werder of ESPN said the Seahawks were mad about Thomas being selected for the testing and one unnamed player said they were treated like criminals on parole. Regardless of what’s true on this one or what isn’t, what is clear is that this Super Bowl has distractions down to an art. Whether we’re talking about the Patriots deflated balls, Marshawn Lynch’s unapproved hat or allegedly pointed PED testing. Everyone should be used to it by now.
The league started testing for HGH in October and the tests are supposed to all be random.
According to a story by the Tacoma News Tribune, Thomas said he was surprised at how well his shoulder was coming along and he gave the credit to the Seahawks medical staff. Thomas sat out and was limited in some early practices leading up to the big game, but he’s been full go since earlier this week.
“I’ve come so far,” Thomas said. “I feel so much better. Each day, it’s surprised me because this is my first time with the injury and you don’t know what to expect. It has been just positive results from the trainers. They’re doing a great job with me.” (via Seahawks.com)
Thomas suffered a dislocated shoulder in the late first half of the NFC title game in Seattle. He would later return to play out the game wearing a shoulder brace. He sat out the first few practices back the following week.
