Tide pokes fun at Marshawn Lynch’s media strategy (Photo)
The lead in to the Super Bowl this week has been Marshawn Lynch and his ability to shut out the media like he’s plowing through the opposing defense and Tide decided to have some fun with one of his catchphrases.
Marshawn Lynch has been a polarizing figure this week after his Media Days appearance resulted in him saying, “I’m here so I won’t get fined” over and over again to stonewall the gathered media.
He has been vilified by those who think he owes it to his fans to speak to the media and give honest and insightful answers as part of his job. The NFL requires players to meet with the media or risk being fined. Lynch met with the media but skirted his obligations by repeating the same line over and over for five minutes to make a mockery of the rule.
Lynch was criticized by former players, including ESPN’s Mark Schlereth who said on NFL Live moments after the interview that Lynch plays a pro sport but that doesn’t make him a professional and thought he acted unprofessional. Tom Jackson and Herm Edwards shared similar thoughts to Schlereth.
But there was the other half who thought Lynch was hilarious in clowning the media and celebrated his act, and that’s exactly what it was, an act.
He had no trouble speaking up when he was compensated in ads for Skittles or Progressive and was absolutely hilarious when he showed his real personality in a segment on Conan when he and Rob Gronkowski played Mortal Kombat.
No matter what side you sit on in regard to Lynch he has made himself the object of jokes as his catchphrases have stolen the show for the second straight year. Last Super Bowl he “was just about that action, boss” and this year it’s he’s here so he won’t get fined and “you know why I’m here” when he gets in front of the media.
Katy Perry made light of this at her press conference on Thursday when the halftime performer said she was there so she wouldn’t get fined and Tiger Woods did the same after his round on Friday.
Even Tide is having fun and sent out this tweet on Friday.
I never would have pegged a laundry detergent to have such a great sense of humor, but sure enough this is pretty funny and an ingenious marketing slogan.
As a matter of fact, I think I’m gonna have to make an official shift in detergents in the house and be a Tide man from now on.
