USA TODAY Panel Ranks the Commercials, Has a Soft Spot For Puppies

More from Super Bowl

USA Today commissioned a panel of “ad enthusiasts” to rank the Super Bowl XLIX ads, and Budweiser’s ad featuring a puppy who runs away before being saved by horses topped the list.

According to USA Today’s rankings, this is the third straight win for Budweiser, as well as the 13th of the past 15 years.

Budweiser has run a series of similar Super Bowl ads featuring a puppy and a horse for years now. Between this and the puppy bowl, Super Bowl Sunday is threatening to become just as much about puppies as it is about football. Then again, who can complain about that? They’re puppies!

The ad campaign should be a welcome PR boost for Budweiser, though it’s unclear how this will inspire more people to drink their beer.

Rounding out the top five were the Always “like a girl” ad, the Fiat “blue pill” ad, Microsoft’s “Braylon” ad, and the Doritos “middle seat” commercial.

Though many may have expected it to place last, Nationwide’s controversial “dead kid” ad ranked 46th of the 61 ads. The depressing nature of the ad garnered a lot of talk and criticism on social media after it aired.

Placing last was a thoroughly unremarkable ad for uCool’s phone game “Heroes Charge.”

USA Today has run the rankings each year since 1989. For full rankings, videos of the ads and more details, the rankings are here.

By the way, no one tell the puppy and the horse about craft beer. We don’t want them jumping ship to a company who can’t afford Super Bowl commercials.
