Mel Brooks confirms he wants a ‘Spaceballs’ sequel

Almost thirty years after its release, Mel Brooks has expressed interest in making a sequel to ‘Spaceballs’ called ‘Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money.’

While most of the movie world is abuzz with rumors and talks of the new Star Wars movie, comedian and legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks announced recently that he is interested in making a sequel to his iconic Star Wars parody Spaceballs, which he would like to begin producing after the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

That’s right. Mel Brooks might actually make a sequel to one of his movies. Crazy considering that after a whole lot of his movies he’ll hint at making a sequel as a gag but never actually follows up on it (See History of the World Part 1).

The announcement came during his recent appearance on the podcast Take a Knee with Adam Carolla. Brooks said that he would title it Spaceballs: Search For More Money, and wants to reunite as much of the original cast members as possible. Which is will be a little hard considering some of the heavy hitters in the movie like John Candy and Joan Rivers have long since passed. And I personally don’t like being reminded that John Candy is not with us.

Another obstacle Brooks is sure to encounter is that of Rick Moranis. If you were a child of the nineties you might recognize Moranis playing loveable nerdy dad type characters in such movies as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and The Little Giants. Moranis bowed out of the acting world in 1997, however, after the tragic death of his wife to breast cancer, citing that it would be hard to be a single father and travel around to do movies. While it sucks that the film world was one less Rick Moranis, it is great to hear that he had his priorities straight.

Who knows though? His kids have long since grown and Moranis has had a few credits since his retirement was announced. Maybe a guy as big as Mel Brooks could be just the thing to pull him out of retirement for one last ride.

Brooks also mentioned in a 2014 interview with Parade that longtime collaborator and screenwriter Tom Meehan of Spaceballs and Young Frankenstein had “some great ideas” for a sequel to the movie. But it really still rides on whether or not Rick wants to be apart of it. From the interview:

"“Without Rick, I wouldn’t do it,” Brooks explained. “I’ve got the helmet in storage, just waiting for him.” He added that he’s spoken with Moranis a few times over the years, but he’s “really strict” about remaining retired."

Here’s hoping Moranis will don the Dark Helmet once again.
