‘The Simpson’s’ Executive Producer: Homer In A Coma Theory is False
By Tony Tran
In response to a recent fan theory on Reddit which surmised that Homer has been in a coma since the 90s, Simpsons producer Al Jean disclaimed the rumor.
Fan theories are a pretty interesting subject. They can range from devastatingly possible to totally insane, but all in all provide fans of movies and television shows an opportunity to flex their creative muscles to create some crazy realities for the things they love. Such was the case with Reddit user HardToPickAName who came up with a pretty interesting theory for the Simpsons: Homer died in an episode back in the 90s and everything since then has been his fever dream.

As a long time Simpsons fan myself, the theory doesn’t really hold any water with me just for the simple fact that the shows creators had absolutely no reason to do such a thing unless they had to have wanted to piss off their entire fanbase in a How I Met Your Mother style ending that would leave fans all over the world storming their studios in California much like that scene from The Simpsons: The Movie.
That being said, the conceit of the theory was pretty interesting.
"“October 1992: Homer The Heretic airs and ends with Homer talking to God.Homer: God, I gotta ask you something. What’s the meaning of life?God: Homer, I can’t tell you that.Homer: C’mon!God: You’ll find out when you die.Homer: I can’t wait that long!God: You can’t wait six months?April 1993 (SIX MONTHS LATER): So It’s Come To This: A Simpsons Clip Show airs and involves Bart’s April Fools prank inadvertently putting Homer into the hospital, where he is then crushed by a vending machine and put in a coma.”"
The post goes on to explain how the series and the episodes got considerably more wacky with the plots getting more and more outlandish. This would add weight to the theory if and only if the episodes didn’t already include wacky plots (which it way did).
Well, long time executive producer for the show Al Jean has come out and made it clear: the rumor is false. Speaking to reporters at TMZ he was quick to dispel the theory saying,
"“It would mean back in 1993 we would presume the show was going on for years and years more and right before we left, threw this hidden monkey wrench in for all our successors,” adding, “I’m afraid it goes with the ‘Dead Bart’ episode in the intriguing but false file.”"
So there you have it. The theory is deader than Maude Flanders (R.I.P.).
