Newly signed Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown said he is excited to compete for the starting job and mentor Johnny Manziel.

Not so shockingly, the Cleveland Browns decided to part ways with quarterback Brian Hoyer after a disastorous end of his run under center in 2014. It might have looked liked the dawn of the Johnny Manziel era, but he had his own struggles down when he got playing time at the end of the season.

Instead, the Browns went to the available players pool and signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh McCown to a three-year deal. A move that definitely meant Hoyer would be departing, and one that doesn’t bode well for Manziel’s immediate future.

McCown is ready to get into the locker room and help groom his teammates, including Manziel.

“I just want to serve our team and help everybody in that locker room, do my best to help everybody in that locker room be better at their job and they’re going to help me, too. It’s a two-way street,” McCown said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I’m just excited about coming in and being a part of a team.

“Year 1 was a solid first year for coach (Mike) Pettine, and to see the vision with what he’s got going on is exciting to me. In my room, I want to be able to help those young guys and pass along my knowledge and experiences I’ve had to help them grow.”

But McCown isn’t looking at this as solely an opportunity to mentor Manziel, the press release specficially stated: “McCown said he’s excited to step into an environment where he can simultaneoously compete for a starting job while mentoring the Browns’ young quarterbacks.”

It will be interesting to see the relationship between Manziel and McCown going forward, but it makes the quarterback battle more compelling as well. McCown had a stellar run with the Chicago Bears two seasons ago when Jay Cutler went out with injury and Manziel has reportedly spent the offseason bettering himself by checking into rehab, and would presumably come into camp with a new focus and drive.
