Oakland Raiders to cut veteran edge rusher Lamarr Woodley (Report)
By Robby Sabo
As the stage of cap casualty releases keeps on marching on, veteran defensive end Lamarr Woodley is the latest to join free agency thanks to the Oakland Raiders.
As you often hear from the great Freddie Mercury on the radio or any other music outputted source: “Another one bites the dust.”

The Oakland Raiders have recently made Lamarr Woodley the latest veteran to join the list of cap casualties that usually get sprayed around NFL free agency this time of year.
CSN Bay Area is reporting that the Raiders have decided to cut the 30-year old former staple of the Pittsburgh Steelers 3-4 defense under legendary defensive coach Dick LeBeau.
As players usually do are the big 30 mark, Woodley dealt with injuries during his first season in Oakland. He only compiled five tackles and zero sacks in six games played before heading to season ending injured reserve with a torn biceps muscle.
The move also comes as no shock to anybody in the league. Woodley was owed a $1 million roster bonus if he was still employed by the silver and black on March 14.
It’s also a no-brainer in the sense that it saves the Raiders a pretty hefty $5.187 million against the cap during this very important offseason.
Oakland’s front office has to be viewing the 2015 offseason as extremely important considering what they saw from potential franchise rookie quarterback Derek Carr last season.
The most important position to fill of 53 slots is now taken care of in the minds of the Raiders brass. It’s just a matter of filling in the blanks around Carr.
Last offseason they went the route of overpaying veteran guys to come in. Woodley, Justin Tuck and Charles Woodson were just a few names brought in during recent times.
This news might signal a much needed change in Raider-town. Maybe they’ve finally realized, while veteran leadership is great, that it’s a young man’s game and building through the draft is the lifeblood of any organization.
Offseason cuts and signing are fantastic, but picking the right guys on those three days in early May is the critical function for all 32 NFL franchises.
For Woodley, he’ll surely find himself a new home with a team looking to plug a rusher in their sub-package. His 57 sacks proves he can be still be extremely efficient on third and longs, regardless of a 3-4 or 4-3 base (as he proved last year in a 4-3 with Oakland).
