The club tried to sign Xavi last summer with the New York City’s director of football operations Claudio Reyna admitting an interest in the Spaniard:
“We do not close the doors to Xavi ahead of next year. It’s true that we have already tried to sign him, but next year we will need new franchise players.”
Xavi opted to stay with the Catalans in the end and is currently a squad player, having only made 13 league starts for Luis Enrique’s side with Ivan Rakitic preferred in midfield.
However, it looks like the club finally succeeded in getting their man if Waxman’s sources are correct. And this means exciting things for the future of American soccer as Xavi is potentially as big an addition to the league as Villa and Lampard.
New fans of the club can be excited for a potential star studded midfield of Lampard and Xavi supplying balls to Villa as the MLS looks to grow even more.
