Veteran shooting guard Ray Allen will not suit up in the NBA this season but doesn’t rule out a return to the court next year.

Ray Allen kept some teams on the leash this season as he weighed the decision of whether to return for another season or if he would retire and begin the countdown on his Hall of Fame induction.

On Wednesday afternoon, Allen finally decided that he will not return to the hardwood this season and will take the time off to reassess his future and whether that means he will make a comeback for the 2015-2016 season.

Allen released a statement through his agency, Tandem Sports + Entertainment:

“Over the past several months, I have taken a lot of time to deliberate what is best for me,” Allen said. “I’ve ultimately decided that I will not play this NBA season. I’m going to take the remainder of this season, as well as the upcoming off-season, to reassess my situation, spend time with my family and determine if I will play in the 2015-16 season.”

Allen holds the record for more made three-pointers in his career and holds the postseason record for most playoff three-pointers and is regarded as one of the best pure shooters to suit up in the NBA.

His agent, Jim Turner said Allen was receiving interest from teams in the postseason hunt, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Heat, Washington Wizards and Atlanta Hawks, among others to have been a rumored fit for Allen in the past few months.

“Ray has received enormous interest from a number of NBA teams throughout this season,” Tanner said. “We will communicate with interested teams as Ray makes a decision for the 2015-16 season.”

He won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2007-2008 and with the Miami Heat in 2012-2013.

Allen has averaged 18.9 points per game throughout his 18-year career with 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game with the Milwaukee Bucks, Seattle Supersonics, Celtics and Heat.
