The Arizona Coyotes will wear their throwback ‘kachina-inspired’ jerseys for their home game against the Vancouver Canucks on March 5. The Coyotes wore these jerseys back when they first relocated to Phoenix from Winnipeg and became the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996 until they changed to the maroon style jerseys that we see today in 2003.

You can see a picture of the throwback jersey that the team will wear from NBC Sports Pro Hockey Talk.

Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith is excited to wear the unique-looking jerseys.

"It’s unique. It’s something when I was growing up I remember watching games with that logo and (Nikolai) Khabibulin here. I like it.”"

The Coyotes don’t have that long of a history, as they came into the league in 1996. However, they were a relocated team, formerly being the Winnipeg Jets. So, their organization actually has a longer history than just from 1996, but the Coyotes themselves don’t have a long history. Still, a lot of iconic players wore this ‘kachina’ jersey when they played for the Phoenix Coyotes.

NHL greats such as Jeremy Roenick, Keith Tkachuk, Tony Amonte, Nikolai Khabibulin, Teppo Numminen and Sean Burke all had the privilege of wearing this ugly jersey. I say ugly with the deepest compliments, as I grew up with the Phoneix Coyotes wearing those jerseys and they’re very symbolic of the Coyotes organization.

Jeremy Roenick will be on hand for the celebration, as he will drop the puck for the ceremonial opening faceoff.  Roenick will also be joined by some of his former teammates, including Greg Adams, Sean Burke, Keith Carney, Craig Adams and Nikolai Khabibulin. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will also receive a Jeremy Roenick bobble head.

It’ll be good for the Coyotes fan base to have something to celebrate and have something to get excited about. After a very disappointing season and their team going into a full rebuild, as well as the upsetting nature of the uncertain future of career-long Coyote and captain Shane Doan with the organization, it will be good for the fans to have something to celebrate.
