Texas Rangers starter Yu Darvish had to be pulled from Thursday’s spring training game against the Royals with right triceps tightness, according to Dallas News reporter Evan Grant.

He only lasted one inning, during which he threw 12 pitches, but also perhaps anxiety-inducing, was the fact that only one was above 90 mph. Of course, Darvish is known for throwing a range of off-speed pitches and he has used pitches below 90 mph for a batter or two before.

Darvish threw 12 pitches in a scoreless inning. He allowed a single by Alcides Escobar, after getting ahead 0-2, but then retired the next three batters with a total of seven pitches. Particularly of note was the nasty slider he used on Kendrys Morales. Darvish then did not return for the second inning, with the team saying it was due to right triceps tightness. Note that the team also said they were sure it wasn’t serious.

Nevertheless, it’s going to have some people worried until Darvish starts again. Remembering that Darvish was shut down for the last seven weeks of 2014 with inflammation in his right elbow, and further remembering the injury cloud of doom that sunk the Rangers pretty early on.

Hopefully, that’s not the case and Darvish will be fine for his next start. Last Sunday he was impressing his teammates in an intrasquad game with a scoreless inning and then he impressed reporters later by eschewing an interpreter to give a six minute interview in English. Specifically he addressed the interesting reports at the end of last season that he gave up on the Rangers sunk season.

“That’s bulls—,” Darvish said. “I never quit the team. I love my teammates and this ballclub, and I’ve never done that in my life. That’s not true.” (via ESPN)

There you go, record, straight. The rest of his interview was reportedly far more upbeat than that and he said he plans to pitch more aggressively this season.
