The Philadelphia Eagles have signed one of the top cornerbacks on the free-agent market, giving Byron Maxwell a five-year, $50-plus million deal.

The Philadelphia Eagles had the second worst secondary in the NFL last season, as they allowed a whopping a 264.9 passing yards per game. Well, the Eagles didn’t waste much time addressing that issue in free-agency.

According to Jayson Braddock of KBME SportsTalk 790 in Houston, the Eagles have signed cornerback Byron Maxwell to a five-year deal worth around $54 million.

"Byron Maxwell deal is done. Guarantee came in higher after more discussion. Byron Maxwell will become an Eagle Tuesday w/ $25 mil guaranteed — Jayson Braddock (@JaysonBraddock) March 8, 2015"

"Deal also changed from 6 year $63 mil. It’s now reportedly set to be a 5 year deal around $53 to 54 million. Byron Maxwell / Eagles — Jayson Braddock (@JaysonBraddock) March 8, 2015"

"The $25 mil guaranteed becomes the 5th most given to an NFL CB. Patrick Peterson / Richard Sherman / Aqib Talb / Brandon Carr — Jayson Braddock (@JaysonBraddock) March 8, 2015"

Maxwell has played opposite Richard Sherman in the Seattle Seahawks’ famed Legion of Boom for the past two seasons.

While signing a cornerback to a $50-plus million deal is a bit of a risky move, Philly had to get a stopper on the outside and Maxwell was one of the best cornerbacks on the market.

Maxwell is an especially valuable player for the Eagles when considering how badly Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant torched them last season (187 yards and three touchdowns in two games). The Eagles finally have someone that can compete with the Cowboys stud receiver.

The Seahawks drafted Maxwell in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Clemson. Maxwell didn’t garner significant playing time with Seattle until 2013, but he thrived immediately upon getting the opportunity. He posted six interceptions and 24 pass deflections over the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
