Floyd Mayweather accused of choking teenager
By Cory Buck
Professional boxer Floyd Mayweather was accused by the family of one of his children’s mother of choking said mother’s son.
With just weeks to go until the premier boxing match of the century between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, it looks like Mayweather could face some more accusations, which has become nothing new in his career, especially considering the source of complaint. Mayweather has been accused, but not formally charged, of putting his self-proclaimed ‘adopted son’ in a rear naked choke hold.

The Sun reports that the family of 19-year-old Devion Cromwell accused Mayweather of choking him in October 2014, around Halloween. Devion’s mother, Melissia Brim, is also the natural mother of one of Mayweather’s children. Their relationship goes back over a decade and includes previous run-ins with the law, including domestic violence incidents to which Mayweather has admitted in 2001 and 2012.
Now it appears that this incident could get swept under the rug like those with Brim, but not if Brim’s family members have a say.
A relative of Devion Cromwell’s, who prefers to remain anonymous, told The Sun, “We are desperate for Devion to do what’s right and bring Floyd to justice.”
Of course, charges levied against Mayweather at this point could put his giant pay-per-view fight at risk. After years of waiting for him to fight Manny Pacquiao, the world is finally close to seeing what they want. Charges could put all that money — and all that anticipation — at risk.
While Cromwell’s anonymous relative understands that, their reasoning is simple: What’s right is right, and an assault charge is still an assault charge.
“Obviously if he’s arrested then it could put his next fight into jeopardy. That isn’t what we want but just because he’s a multi-millionaire it doesn’t mean he can wash his hands and get away with it.”
The accusations stem from an incident on Halloween in which Mayweather told Cromwell to dismiss his friends from Brim’s home. When Cromwell refused, the incident supposedly escalated to a point where Mayweather put Cromwell in a rear naked choke, which can be dangerous when improperly applied.
While Cromwell is not Mayweather’s son, he has been referred to as the boxer’s ‘adopted son’ and the two have been seen ringside at other fights, among other public venues. For now, no charges have been filed as a result of the alleged incident. To date, Devion has not spoken with authorities since the night of the incident.
