Tyler Wilps loses NCAA Wrestling Championships on locked hands (Video)

The 174 pound final between Tyler Wilps and Matt Brown at the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships ended with controversy because of locked hands. 

The 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships came to a heart-wrenching end for No. 8 Tyler Wilps of Pittsburgh.

In the 174-pound final against No. 2 Matthew Brown of Penn State, Wilps was holding his own and was on his road to a national championship when he unfortunately fell victim to the locked hands rule.

Brutal.

The rule reads:

"If you are down on the mat in control of your opponent, you cannot lock or overlap your hands, fingers or arms around your opponent’s body or both legs unless you have met criteria for a near pin of your opponent, or your opponent stands up and has all his/her weight on two feet, or you have lifted the opponent off the mat."

As you would expect with such a surprising ending, there were plenty of people commenting on how the rule went down.

Unfortunately, Wilps didn’t benefit from the official review. Instead, Brown won the national championship and Tyler Wilps will be left wondering, “what if.”
