The Gonzaga Bulldogs saw their men’s basketball team advance to the Elite Eight on Friday night. Saturday night their women’s team looks to do the same.
And they have one potential advantage: a home game in the Sweet 16 against Tennessee. The home game comes despite the fact they are the lower seeded team. In fact, they’ve been the lower seed in both of their first two tournament games–double-digit victories over 6th-seeded George Washington and 3rd seed Oregon State.
But the Lady Vols are a different team than those two schools. Truthfully there are only a couple of schools which can match the history and grandeur of the Tennessee women’s basketball program.
Of course most of that magic came under legendary head coach Pat Summit. Holly Warlick, though, has taken over the program and kept it flying high–finishing this season with a 27-5 record (15-1 in the SEC) before notching consecutive double-digit wins on their home floor in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
Though it would be a huge upset for 26-7 Gonzaga to knock off the storied Lady Vols, it would not be terribly unprecedented. In fact, their story is somewhat similar. They are playing this season under first-year head coach Lisa Fortier, after long-time head coach Kelly Graves left the program to take over the program down the road in Eugene, Oregon.
Plus, Gonzaga made the Elite 8 in 2011 under Graves in Spokane. But Saturday night’s game will take place two miles from campus thanks to Garth Brooks winning a scheduling conflict at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento–the originally scheduled host for this regional.
