The Ravens have signed former Texans starter Matt Schaub

The Baltimore Ravens have reportedly agreed to a contract with quarterback Matt Schaub, who was released by the Raiders earlier this offseason.

Sports Illustrated columnist Peter King account reported the news:

It’s not hard to see their reasoning; the Ravens have no proven quarterbacks on their roster beyond starter Joe Flacco. Plus, it’s not that long ago (2012) that Schaub was considered a good quarterback.

Schaub was the regular starter for the Houston Texans from 2007 through 2013. Under Schaub, the franchise turned the corner from pathetic expansion team to viable NFL contenders. Schaub’s peak came in 2009, when he led the NFL with 4,770 yards. The team’s peak came in a 12-4 2012 season in which they won the division title and beat the Bengals in the playoffs.

Schaub quickly went full Jake Delhomme on us, tossing pick-six after pick-six in 2013 and playing no small part in the Texans’ crash to 2-14 that year.

It’s one of the furthest falls in a while, as Schaub went from the starting quarterback on a playoff team to the guy who was throwing so many interceptions that he led fans to cheer when he got hurt, and in one case, for two fans to follow him home to yell at him for being so bad (though that has less to do with his play and more to do with them being insane).

After that disastrous season, the Texans traded Schaub to the Oakland Raiders, where he was expected to be the starter, but lost a preseason battle for the job to rookie Derek Carr, thus completing the Carr-Schaub-Carr cycle (Schaub replaced Derek Carr’s brother David with the Texans in 2007).

Schaub didn’t take the field for the Raiders until Oct. 26, and, in what has become typical Schaub fashion, immediately threw a pick on a terrible fake field goal.

So that’s what the Ravens are getting this year.

It’s unclear why the Ravens are interested in Schaub, as Flacco has never missed a start in his seven-year career. Plus the Ravens need to conserve cap space thank’s to Flacco’s gigantic contract, which pays him

$1 trillion

$120 million over six years. They traded Haloti Ngata, a great starting defensive tackle, in a salary dump move, but they had the money to outbid other teams for Schaub? It just doesn’t seem like the best use of their resources.
