Unfortunately, because of a reported cramp in his arm, Justin Verlander could start the year on the disabled list.

It’s been a tough couple of years for Justin Verlander. At 32 years old, Verlander is on the downward slope of his career and although he will never have a year with a record of 24-5 again, the Detroit Tigers are still relying on him to be one of the top pitchers in MLB.

With Max Scherzer bolting for the Washington Nationals, there is now more added pressure on Verlander to perform at the highest level. However, given the amount of innings he has pitched over the course of his career, his body could start to keep him back and his arm could start deteriorating. It was reported Tuesday night that Verlander may start the year on the disabled list because of a cramp in his elbow.

Here’s what Tigers’ manager Brad Ausmus had to say about Verlander and how he could very well start the year on the disabled list.

This was reported a day after Verlander said that he didn’t throw on Monday because of a triceps cramp. He also said that the he would be taking the injury day by day.

After being pulled from his Grapefruit League start on Friday because of discomfort in his throwing arm, Verlander may have to start the year on the 15-day disabled list. Despite that, the Tigers need him back and this injury could hurt him long-term. This story will be something to monitor in the coming days.
