J.T. Miller of the New York Rangers flicked the perfect wrist shot past Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

J.T. Miller grew up a Pittsburgh Penguins fan as an Ohio native on the border of Pennsylvania. Of the opportunity to play against his favorite childhood team, and his hockey idol, Sidney Crosby, Miller said, “It’s pretty cool.”

The 22-year-old has not been starstruck, though, thus far in the series. Instead, he made a huge play in the first period of Game 2.

The 2011 first-round pick of the New York Rangers only played in one game in last season’s playoff matchup between the two rivals, and was antsy for his opportunity this season.

He earned that opportunity this season and took full advantage Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Miller took advantage of a line change after the puck was cleared out of the Pittsburgh zone.

Miller looked like he too was headed for the bench but pivoted back into the action and skated to open space on the right wing where no Penguins defender even seemed to notice him.

Luckily for the Rangers, and Miller, Derek Stepan did see the youngster come wide open. He threw an absolutely perfect pass, right on the stick of Miller who then let off a rocket of a wrist shot on a perfect angle.

The oft-criticized Marc-Andre Fleury had no chance to stop the perfectly placed shot.

Miller’s goal was not enough, though for the Rangers, as they succumbed to the Penguins 4-3, tying the series 1-1 as the teams take the series to Pittsburgh.
