Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright might very well be shut down for the season after suffering an Achilles injury, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting on Sunday.

Wainwright suffered the injury not on the mound, but when he was coming out of the batter’s box on Saturday against the Brewers following a pop-up. He’s scheduled to have an MRI, and it seems as if the team is not expecting the results to be good. Initially the Cardinals and manager Mike Matheny feared it was an ankle injury, but the reports say it’s far more severe with the Achilles being the root of the problem.

He did speak to reporters following the 5-3 win over Milwaukee and he didn’t really seem to have any clue what he had done either.

“I thought I got hit by something,” Wainwright said via MLB.com. “If you look at the replay, I kind of get out of the box and I look back thinking, ‘Gosh, the catcher’s mask must have hit me. The bat must have hit me or something.”

Wainwright would also go on to tell the media following the game that he wasn’t going to get his hopes up that it wasn’t anything serious, which now seems like a good idea.

Whatever the case ends up being, this is obviously not the news that the Cardinals wanted this early in the season. So far in this early season, Wainwright has been looking as if he was headed towards another fantastic season, compiling a 2-1 record with a 1.44 ERA.

With a 12-4 record, the Cardinals are currently in first place in the NL Central, three games ahead of the rival Chicago Cubs. Losing their ace could be a substantial blow going forward.
