ESPN reporter Britt McHenry was suspended for a week for a hateful tirade caught on video; now she’s looking for a second chance

Suspended ESPN reporter Britt McHenry, back at work after a one-week suspension from the network, posted her first message on twitter since the suspension. In it, she apologized again for her actions, and asked for the opportunity to earn a second chance.

McHenry was suspended for a week after a video surfaced of the reporter verbally abusing a tow truck employee.

Here’s McHenry’s tweet:

The full message reads as follows:

"Back to work. Excited to be covering Caps-Isles today. Now that the suspension is over, I want to say again that I’m so sorry for my recent hurtful actions. My remarks were completely out of line. Under no circumstances is it ever acceptable to speak to another human being in the manner in which I chose that night. That’s not who I am as a person and hope those who only know me from this incident will give me a second chance to prove to you how much I value integrity, character and treating people with respect. –Britt"

McHenry’s suspension came after a video surfaced of her berating a towing company employee, making fun of the female employee’s weight, education, and looks, saying she’s better than the clerk because she’s on TV, and pulling them “do you know who I am?” card.

Here’s the original video (warning: language is NSFW):

Some questioned whether McHenry’s suspension was long enough, noting that fellow ESPN personality Bill Simmons received a three-week suspension for calling Roger Goodell a liar. It does speak to some inconsistencies with the network; are we really supposed to believe that what Simmons did was three times worse than McHenry’s tirade?

It’s not going to be easy for McHenry to go back to a job where several coworkers spoke out and said that they wanted her fired. It’s also going to take a while before she earns back the public’s respect and trust, if she ever does. People just aren’t going to want to see her on their TVs, knowing this about her, and who can blame them?
