With a runner stealing third, minor league catcher Humberto Quintero hit the batter in the midsection with his throw.

There’s often a reason a player is in the minor leagues, especially one who has been in the major leagues previously. For Boston Red Sox farmhand, Humberto Quintero it appears to be throwing accuracy behind the plate, unless the objective is to injure the feelings of opposing batters (read between the lines with that one).

In a Triple-A game between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Durham Bulls, Quintero hit Durham’s Luke Maile right in the midsection when trying to make a throw to third base with a Durham runner trying to steal.

Here’s the video:

Quintero, who has played in 471 major league games spread across 11 seasons from 2003 to 2014, has been known in his career as a suitable backup catcher who can call a good game and do fundamental things like throw to bases well.

But in this instance Quintero looked much more like Rube Baker the Indians catcher in Major League II who couldn’t even throw the ball back to the pitcher without episode.

While that was a fictional situation in a movie, this situation was potentially scary, especially for Maile. What is ironic is Quintero’s immediate query to the home plate umpire to gain a batter’s interference call.

Playing the blame game, Quintero failed to recognize he threw the ball right at Maile. There’s noting Maile could do to get out of the way.
