Brewers’ Will Smith adds his name to the hall of shame after being ejected for having a foreign substance on his wrist.

New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda has been removed from the soiled seat of shame for being caught with a foreign substance on his body.  In his place, Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Will Smith.

Smith, in his 4th MLB season, entered the game in the 7th inning after Brewers starter Matt Garza struggled through 4 batters only getting one out and giving up the go ahead run. We’ve heard of pitchers not recording an out but never this way.

After the left-hander threw a pitch that bounced in front of the plate and hit pinch-hitter Pedro Ciriaco, Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez came out to ask about something he thinks he saw on Smith’s wrist.

How did Will Smith react to getting caught? By releasing obscenities toward the Braves bench with each slow step he took to leave the field after umpire Jim Joyce ejected him.

Listening to the Braves radio broadcast through MLB’s At-Bat feature, a full inning later the announcers  were still pondering why Smith would pick such an obvious place to put the foreign substance (rumoured to be either pine tar or Vaseline).  The announcers explained that the “wet spot” on Smith’s arm gets turned and exposed to the home plate umpire during delivery of the pitch.

Incognito apparently is not in Will Smith’s vocabulary but the word stupid is in umpire Joyce’s vocabulary.  Can’t think of a better word to describe the situation.
