There was a scary collision at home plate during the first inning of Sunday’s game between the Oakland A’s and Tampa Bay Rays.

There was a scary moment early in Sunday’s game between the Oakland A’s and Tampa Bay Rays when Stephen Vogt and Steven Souza Jr. collided at home plate. Souza was attempting to score from third following an infield grounder. Rather than turn to first, A’s shortstop Marcus Semien threw a dart to home. The result was this.

Vogt held on to the ball for the third out, and prevented Tampa from tying the score at 1-1. The catcher was rattled on the play, which drew manager Bob Melvin out from the dugout.

Both Vogt and Souza would stay in the game, with Vogt actually recording an RBI sacrifice fly in the 3rd to push Oakland ahead, 2-0.
