The agent of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is optimistic that the two sides will reach a deal eventually.

Mark Rodgers, who represents Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, broke his silence on the negotiations between the team and Wilson on Thursday morning as he spoke to Seattle’s ESPN radio. Rodgers countered a lot of the cynical mainstream media speculation by saying that he was very optimistic about a deal that would make Wilson a Seahawk for a long time, according to a story by the Tacoma News Tribune.

Rodgers also confirmed that Wilson will be at the OTAs on Friday, after he attended the funerals of Jimmy Graham’s manager and Cliff Avril’s father. Both funerals were in Florida with the first one on Monday and the next one on Thursday. It was a great gesture as a leader for Wilson and Rodgers praised it as such. He also said that Wilson is still excited to be a Seahawk and naturally loves playing for Pete Carroll. Rodgers said Wilson knows that the franchise is in a special place at the moment, after going to two consecutive Super Bowls and no one counting them out for a third one.

"“He wants to stay a part of that for a long, long time,” Rodgers said."

The comments make total sense, in spite of all the reports that there is some “huge gulf” for the two sides to overcome. Plenty of reports from reputable mainstream sources have said anything from the Seahawks having Wilson play out his contract, to franchise tagging him next year, to the two sides being completely on different pages. Rodgers debunked this by saying that 95 percent of what he’s heard about the negotiations has been wrong.

The other thing Rodgers pointed out is that there’s no firm deadline on this contract by either side. He said Wilson would be totally fine with playing out the rest of his contract this year and move on from there. The main takeaway here is that obviously Wilson wants to stay with the Seahawks and that Seattle wants him to be their franchise quarterback. As long as neither side budges from those two givens, then it’s inevitable that a deal will be worked out, just as Rodgers is saying.

Rodgers even made mention of the fact that not only is Wilson fine with playing out his final year, he’s prepared for it. He doesn’t have a mortgage or a car payment and has been planning financially to complete the final year of his contract. That also debunks the idea that no contract means huge distractions for him and the team in this NFL season.

So worry not, Seahawks fans, Wilson isn’t going anywhere. It’s a matter of when, not if, he’ll get a new contract.
