Things got a little heated between John Calipari and Dan Patrick on Thursday

Dan Patrick’s morning show got pretty fiery Thursday morning during an interview with Kentucky head coach John Calipari. It seems maybe this was sparked by something not entirely in the context of conversation, because the conversation started out rather normal.

Calipari started by explaining his relationship with former players, and sort of his ethos when it came to appropriating players from high school. Around the 11 minute mark Calipari starts to get pretty heated when Dan Patrick asks him about his “Platooning” system from this past season.

Dan Patrick was pushing an opinion that he was playing his 10-man rotation for non-basketball reasons. This wasn’t a subtle, “you should have substituted at this point,” or “hand-off the ball,” such as in the case of the Super Bowl. But it was a slight on an entire year to a coach that remains one of the most celebrated coaches in all of basketball.

Earlier questions from the show were worded to get a rise out of Calipari and it seems like the intent was reached. Each question had a presupposed “the surface is a lie, and underneath is the truth.” Handling questions like these would irritate anybody. It assumes you have already lied.

Dan, around the end of the interview, tells Calipari that he doesn’t need to get defensive, but the question is an attack because it is based on an indictment.

The most surprising thing about this, though, is Calipari’s response to insult Dan Patrick about his playing career and his ability to run a radio show. John Calipari hosts his own radio show, so I would assume he would maintain a level head in spite of the bogus line of questioning.
