The Sacramento Kings are signing for the fences in an attempt to hire John Calipari away from Kentucky and give him the keys to their franchise.

When the Sacramento Kings hired George Karl to replace Mike Malone late last season, it seemed like he was going to turn the franchise around after years of obscurity. Little did we know at that time Karl was digging his own grave, and the grave of general manager Vlade Diviac as well.

The problem caused between the Kings front office and Karl over what to do with DeMarcus Cousins has soured relationships across the board. This could lead to changes very soon — and changes of the most extreme nature, at that.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo! Sports, the Kings are actively courting John Calipari to be the team’s new head coach and general manager.

"Calipari has been communicating with owner Vivek Ranadive and other members of the Kings ownership group in recent weeks, league sources said. Calipari has listened to scenarios with which the Kings could offer him complete control of the franchise’s fledgling basketball operations to go along with coaching, league sources said."

This is good news for the Kings, in theory, and very bad news for the two men currently holding the titles of head coach and general manager.

George Karl was already skating on thin ice, and his tenure with the Kings might end up coming to an abrupt end in the very near future. Ditto for the job of GM Vlade Diviac, who recently took over the team and may have already played himself out of a job.

This isn’t the first time an NBA team has courted Calipari, and it won’t be the last. But there’s something oddly legit about Calipari coming to Sacramento, as giving him all the power in the world and all the money as well might be the Godfather offer that Coach Cal can’t refuse.
