England lost to Japan with an own goal in stoppage time of the Women’s World Cup semifinals.

The Women’s World Cup Final is set, the United States women’s national team will play Japan in a rematch of the 2011 final.

It looked like the semifinals clash between Japan and England was headed to extra time with a 1-1 tie in stoppage time of the second half. Then a huge mistake from England ended their World Cup run and punched Japan’s ticket to the final.

England’s Laura Bassett was trying to stop a pass into the box towards a Japan attacker, stretching her foot out to clear the ball. Instead she caught the underside of the cross bar in the top right corner of the goal and the ball was in to the back of the net.

Bassett was visibly distraught and heartbroken as the final whistle blew, her face buried in her shirt as she likely fought back tears. Her teammates rallied around their teammate to console her.

Japan and the United States women’s national team will meet on Sunday, July 5th in the final.

Bassett was clearly distraught, and it was hard to watch as her teammates consoled her on the field.
