As more of the dominoes continue to fall here in NBA Free Agency, eventually point guard Rajon Rondo will find himself a new home for next season. At the moment, it’s expected that he’ll end up with the Sacramento Kings for at least one season.

But, the Los Angeles Lakers?

It has to be emphasized here that that’s all this was — a phone call. The chances of Rondo actually ending up as a member of the Lakers is very unlikely.

To start with, he and Kobe Bryant probably aren’t a good fit to begin with, and with what Rondo is looking for this upcoming season, it’s about as bad a fit as ever. Rondo has made it no secret that he wants to use this upcoming season to show that he has enough in the tank to get a lucrative deal during next year’s free agency period. Basically, this season is an image-rebuilding campaign. That can’t happen playing on this Lakers team.

Then you have the issue of minutes getting taken away from the No. 2 overall pick, D’Angelo Russell. This is the young man that you can see as the face of the Lakers franchise eventually, so the last thing you want to do is have Rondo come in and take the brunt of his experience minutes away.

But, this is the free agency period after all. Some phone calls have to be made, even if they’re just a formality.
