With Monta Ellis moving on to the Indiana Pacers, the Dallas Mavericks were left with a pretty big hole at the shooting guard position. Well, it didn’t take them all that long to make sure they got that gaping hole filled up.

Late Thursday night the team came to an agreement with Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews on a four-year deal.

This is about as good of a replacement as you can find for the departure of Ellis. If there is one worry about Matthews it’s the fact that he’s coming off an Achilles injury. Despite that, though, the Mavericks are willing to take their chances on the young guard.

Maybe the most intriguing part about this deal, however, is the fact that Matthews actually turned down a much more lucrative offer to play with the Kings to head off to Dallas.

It’s pretty clear now that not many players want ti play for the Kings organization, even if that means turning down a few extra dollars to go somewhere else with a more stable environment.

If that Achilles injury is healed, then the Mavericks are getting one of the best shooters in the game, and more importantly, someone that isn’t too shabby on defense either. In the always tough Western Conference, you can always use a guard that can get it done on the defensive end of the floor.

Matthews has spent the last five years of his career with the Blazers, and he’s averaged 14.9 points per game in his six-year career.
