Cam Newton worked out with an AFL team during his time in Australia.

Cam Newton, down in Australia as part of an Athlete Exchange program with Gatorade, got to take in a little football Down Under style. Newton met up with the Richmond Football Club to train and learn the finer points of footy from The Tigers.

According to Newton, per the Herald Sun, the biggest change between American and Aussie Rules Football is the philosophical difference in protection. Not so much that as a quarterback he’s essentially behind a trench line of monstrously sized men. No, it’s more in the way that NFLers have pads from head to toe, whereas AFLers slam bodies while running around in their skivvies.

"“In our sport, they’re constantly putting things on you to protect you, but in this sport they’re taking things away,” he said.“I’m seeing guys get prepared and all they’re wearing in essence is a tank top and a pair of boxers and going out there and giving it all they have. That makes them courageous.”"

Could you imagine NFL players laying waste to each other without any padding on? The Haloti Ngatas and Clay Matthews are scary enough as it is. We’d be putting guys in body bags every game.

It’s been a pretty eventful offseason for Cam thus far. Graduating from Auburn, signing a whopping $100 million contract extensionand brutalizing all comers at Knockerball – not a bad little summer at all.
