No one is going to question that Steve Spurrier and Kevin Sumlin are two of the most impressive offensive minds roaming the college football sidelines today. However, as we’ve seen of late, they’ve been struggling with their respective teams on the defensive side of the ball. Last season both Texas A&M and South Carolina had some of the worst defenses in the game.
To help with this issue, both men have brought in new defensive coordinators in the hopes that they can get that side of the ball under control to give them a shot at the SEC title. Sumlin turned to the one man that has been able to halt his offense, former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis, while Spurrier brought in longtime assistant John Hoke.
We don’t know yet who will end up having the more improved defense, but we do know that the head coach with the better unit will be a whopping $10 richer thanks to the other.
In an interview with ESPN Radio, Spurrier confirmed that he and Sumlin have a friendly wager going as to who will be able to get their defensive unit on the right track in 2015.
“Us and them were sort of at the bottom of the SEC in most defensive categories,” Spurrier told ESPN Radio, “and I bet him $10 a few minutes ago that our defense would be more improved than his defense.”
You have to love both Spurrier and Sumlin, seeing as they were able to make a little game out of all this. In a few short weeks we’ll start to find out who’s on the winning track.
This should be a fun race to watch play out over the course of the coming college football season.
