New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez turned 40 on Tuesday, and his career has been filled with up and downs.

Every time that Alex Rodriguez steps on to the field, he does so with a milestone in sight. On Monday, the MLB veteran celebrated another one, but this one had nothing to do with playing the game of baseball or setting records.

On Monday, Alex Rodriguez celebrated his 40th birthday.

Love him or hate him, Alex Rodriguez has been part of the baseball landscape for 22 years now and in that time, he’s undoubtedly written his name numerous times throughout the recorded history of the game. Sure, there have been great moments in his career and there have been those clouded in controversy, but there is no doubting that from the moment he retired, A-Rod will have made his mark on the game.

The question will always be how the fans, historians, or pundits choose to remember him past his playing days. Will they see what he accomplished on the field and respect his contributions to the record books? Will they see A-Rod as another juiced slugger who has clouded the history of the game? Will A-Rod simply fall back into the shadows, similar to those that came before him and be forgotten as a new generation takes over?

As a retrospective, we’ve decided to examine the 21-year career of Alex Rodriguez in commemoration of his 40th birthday by taking a look at the best and worst moments, and what he can possibly expect as age-40 take hold.
