With the MLB Trade Deadline rapidly approaching here this week, everyone is waiting to see if the New York Yankees pull the trigger on anything. Every year around this time people look to see if the Yankees make a significant move, and they might actually be planning one that involves Craig Kimbrel.

As we know, the San Diego Padres are more than likely going to dump the closer this week, and according to a report from Jon Heyman of CBS, the Yankees are indeed interested in pursuing a potential deal.

However, the likelihood of this actually taking place is pretty slim. The Yankees don’t necessarily have a need for Kimbrel, as they have a pretty solid bullpen this season, but it never hurts to add an arm down the stretch. With the Toronto Blue Jays showing recently that they’re serious about making a run down the stretch here, it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world to get a solid arm like Kimbrel in the fold.

Also, there’s the issue of the Padres wanting too much from the Yankees. For someone like Kimbrel, the asking price will be up there, one would think, and another thing we’ve learned about the Yankees this season is that they’re not all that willing to part with some of their top prospects. If anything, this would be the factor that holds up any deal from happening.

Again, it probably won’t happen by the end of this week, but you know the Yankees — they always at least call and ask first, that’s the way Brian Cashman does things.

This season for the Padres Kimbrel is 1-2 with a 2.75 ERA out of the bullpen with 29 saves.
