Who is Andre Berto?
By Jack Crosby
Now that we know Floyd Mayweather will be fighting on September 12, who exactly is his opponent, Andre Berto?
We’ve known for quite a while now that Floyd Mayweather planned on fighting some time in September. On Tuesday, Mayweather himself confirmed the news, stating that he’ll be entering the ring on September 12. Not much longer after that announcement was made, we learned that his opponent would be the name that was rumored as the front runner for a while now, Andre Berto. The fight will take place on Showtime PPV.
Back in May, Mayweather captured a unanimous decision victory over Manny Pacquiao in the fight people waited nearly a decade for. It was two of the biggest names in all of boxing finally doing battle, even though it really didn’t live up to the hype it was given.
That being said, Andre Berto isn’t exactly the sexiest name in the sport. A lot of casual fans tuned in to see Mayweather and Pacquiao get in the ring with each other, but those same casual fans might have have the slightest clue as to who Andre Berto is.
Well, here’s a brief rundown.
Berto will be coming into the biggest fight of his life with a career record of 30-3 with 23 knockouts. He’s 31 years old and he hails from Winter Haven, Florida, where he was born and raised.
Now that record of his at 30-3 with the 23 knockouts might look appealing, but there is one small issue. All of those three losses have come in his last six fights. He lost by TKO back in July of 2013, a unanimous decision in December of 2012 and another unanimous loss in April of 2011. So more recently, he hasn’t been all that successful.
But, those 23 knockouts show you that he can bring the punching power. Throughout history, power punchers haven’t fared all that well against Floyd, so he’ll have to work on keeping clear of the mind games in the ring as much as possible. He needs to pick his spots wisely to try and hit those power punches, or else he’ll end up like all the rest — too gassed to keep going and at the mercy of the 48-0 Floyd Mayweather.
If he can’t fall into the trap of Mayweather, then things could get interesting on September 12. Whatever the case ends up being, Andre Berto has been tabbed as the next person to try and dent the unblemished record of Floyd Mayweather.
