US Open Women’s Final sells out because of Serena Williams

The U.S. Open Women’s Final has already sold out because fans want to see Serena Williams.

The U.S. Open Women’s Final has already sold out. That might not seem noteworthy to some, but the Men’s Final hasn’t sold out yet and this is believed to be the first time in history that it has happened.

From ESPN’s Darren Rovell:

"USTA spokesman Chris Widmaier said ticket records, as with anything, are less reliable over time, but the organization is confident that this is the first time the ticket demand was greater for a women’s final.In fact, in some years, the women’s final has not even sold out."

So what is going on in tennis that would cause the Women’s Final to sell out before the Men’s?

Serena Williams.

Williams has been dominating women’s tennis this year and is on the verge of accomplishing some pretty impressive feats. First, a U.S. Open win would give her all four Grand Slam titles in a single calendar year. The last person to do that was Steffi Graff in 1988, 27 years ago.

Graff also has the second most Grand Slam titles with 22, and a U.S. Open would give Serena her 22nd, tying her on the all-time list.

But Williams hasn’t even made it to the finals yet, the tournament hasn’t even started, and fans are already buying tickets to try and witness history, cheaper than trying to buy them later if/when she reaches the Final. That or fans are buying tickets up to scalp them for probably a sizable profit if Williams reaches the final.
